ASUS TUF Gaming A15 FA506IH-AS53 Review - Choosing the right laptop is arguably easy to bother. When it comes to gaming laptops, there are several laptops with solid designs, but the innards are a bit bearable. While on the other hand, there are also laptops that have qualified innards for gaming but instead have a design that might not be satisfactory.
Around June 2020, ASUS launched the latest TUF (The Ultimate Force) Gaming line, namely TUF Gaming A15. Using the latest AMD Ryzen CPU and NVIDIA GeForce RTX series GPU, this laptop is expected to have fast performance. I happened to have the opportunity to try out the ASUS TUF Gaming A15 and was quite curious about the performance and quality of this laptop as a whole.

Design
Looking at it from the outside, the ASUS TUF Gaming A15 is quite minimalist, while still maintaining its identity as a gaming laptop. ASUS TUF Gaming A15 only provides Fortress Gray color variants for Indonesian releases. The Fortress Gray color variant has an aluminum-like gray color, with an ornament of iron nuts on each corner, and the TUF logo in the center.
The calm military-style appearance tends to be more low-profile, when compared to other gaming laptops, which sometimes also feature RGB light ornaments on the back of the laptop. With such a display, TUF Gaming A15 is still suitable for use in various situations, including formal situations.

Even though the laptop back cover design is minimalist, you will feel a different feel after peering under the back cover, you will find an exhaust to let out hot air, which has a racing-style appearance in copper color. At first glance, the combination of black and copper in the exhaust makes me think of the back of the Lamborghini car, which seems to emphasize how fast the performance of this laptop is. The build quality of the TUF Gaming A15 is arguably quite solid, even though all the laptop parts are made of plastic including the back of the laptop which looks like aluminum.
Performance
My fast benchmark in terms of gaming may also be a little dime. As before, for competitive gaming and optimize the 144Hz display from this laptop. Before going to the discussion of performance, I want to tell you first that TUF Gaming A15 has 3 presets for laptop performance settings. The three modes are Silent, Performance, and Turbo, which you can find on the main page of the Armory Crate application.
Silent Mode slows down fan rotation to reduce noise, while reducing overall CPU and GPU performance. Performance mode makes TUF Gaming A15 run more optimally with the fan spinning faster, and of course more noisy. While Turbo Mode might be considered a kind of "minor overclock", it improves overall CPU and GPU performance with the fastest fan speeds reaching 5600 RPM.
Based on the claim on the product page, ASUS TUF Gaming can run up to 8.7 hours for browsing, and 12.3 hours for playing videos. To test the battery life of the laptop, I played video at 1080p resolution repeatedly until the laptop turns off. The result is the laptop managed to last for 2 hours 46 minutes 43 seconds. But indeed, the note is on battery life using Performance mode, which is selected by default by laptops. Of course, battery life will vary depending on the level of use, and the mode you choose.
Display
Judging from the screen specifications, it is true that color reproduction is one of the weaknesses of this laptop. In response, I still feel this 144Hz screen with Adaptive Sync is more than enough. The response is fast enough, providing a smooth gaming experience without any screen-tearing.
However, the color reproduction and brightness level of the TUF Gaming A15 display is something that is quite a challenge for me. TUF Gaming A15 is quite tight to produce bright colors, one of its functions is to make it easier to find enemies when playing competitive FPS games. Fortunately ASUS embed the Game Visual software, which contains several preset display color reproduction for several types of games, including FPS.
The brightness level is not that high. Quoting ultrabookreview.com reviews, the brightness level of the ASUS TUF Gaming A15 monitor is around 250 nits. With my experience using this laptop, I feel that the brightness level of the laptop display is still inferior to the brightness of the room lights at the highest setting.
Verdict
ASUS TUF Gaming A15 FX506 is actually quite good in terms of performance, maybe even more than enough. The drawbacks may only be from the display side that seems responsibility, the display that tends to be minimalist, and the fan sound which tends to be noisy.
